Intimate Bach in G

About the CD

The organ at Blessed Sacrament Church in Kitchener, Ontario was built by master organ builder Gerhard Brunzema in two stages in 1983 and 1991. The result is a two manual instrument with a very developed main manual and a small accompanying manual. This feature means that pieces with a solo voice are welcomed by this organ with a wide variety of possible solo sounds. The Trumpet for the Christmas hymn, Der Tag, the Schwebung in the mellow tenor register for Allein Gott, the Quinte in Liebster Jesu and the 4' flutes transposed down with the tremulant: the Rohrflöte for the 13th Variation and the Holzflöte for the Sonata Lente movement, all are ravishing sounds.

The pedal carillon figure borrows strength from the main manual in In dir ist Freude and sometimes both hands play on the main manual chorus sounds as in the outer movements of the concerto.

It is in the pieces in which the main manual must balance with the accompanying manual that we hear the intimate sound palette which results in something very different than the usual grand organ sounds. The three movements of the trio sonata and the Goldberg Variations for two manuals are a charming and thoroughly beguiling evocation of an intimate spirit in Bach's music. The constant motion of the baroque style is heard on this organ as a babbling brook rather than a roaring waterfall. I hope you will share my delight in using this small scale intimate setting to present the G+ Prelude and Fugue and the Jig fugue with its echo effects between the manuals.

Bach wrote in many different genres, styles and forms often with at least a half dozen examples of each. Focusing on the key of G major which seems to have been a happy and sunny one for Bach allowed me to link examples from each of them in this program for the glory of God and delight and instruction of music lovers (as Bach himself so often wrote in the introductions to his published volumes).

It is an honour to associate myself with his sentiments, the artistry of his music and the artistry of the organ builder who makes it possible for this music to live in our time.
